Municipal & Public Works is a 10-course online training package for parks, streets, sanitation, fleet, and building maintenance crews at city, county, and special-district public works departments. It covers permit-required confined space, excavation/trenching/shoring, electrical arc flash prevention, lockout/tagout, HAZCOM, PPE, defensive driving, aerial lifts, crisis management, and slips/trips/falls. Pricing starts at $175 per employee for teams of 50 to 99 and goes up to $249 per employee for teams of 1 to 9. All ten courses are available in English and Spanish. Each employee receives a certificate of completion.

What This Package Covers

Public works crews face one of the widest hazard mixes in any industry. Confined spaces (manholes, sewers, vaults), trenching (utility cuts), traffic and work zone exposure, vehicle operations, lockout/tagout in mechanic shops, and electrical work on streetlights and traffic signals all routinely appear in OSHA's most-cited list. Government agencies are heavily audited, take compliance documentation seriously, and budget for training annually.

This package covers the ten hazards that drive most OSHA citations across public works operations. Buying these courses individually at retail would cost $250 to $300 per employee. This package delivers all ten for $175 to $249 per employee depending on your crew size.

Designed for

City public works departments, county road crews, parks and recreation, sanitation, fleet maintenance, and building maintenance for municipal facilities. Particularly valuable for state OSHA plan states (CA, WA, OR, NV, AZ, MN, MI, NC, SC, TN, KY, VA, MD, NJ, NY, PR) where state requirements often exceed federal OSHA in public-sector applicability.

Courses Included

All 10 courses are available in English and Spanish at no additional charge. Nine of the ten also include multi-language closed captions.

What These Courses Address

Public works operations are governed by a wide spread of OSHA general industry and construction standards. Permit-required confined space programs and entrant training are required under 29 CFR 1910.146. Trenching and excavation requirements are addressed under 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P. Electrical safe work practices are required under 29 CFR 1910.331-335. Lockout/tagout training is required under 29 CFR 1910.147. HAZCOM training is required before exposure to hazardous chemicals, per 29 CFR 1910.1200(h). PPE hazard assessment and training are required under 29 CFR 1910.132. Aerial lift operator training is required under 29 CFR 1926.453 and ANSI A92.

Penalties for serious violations can reach $16,550 per instance; repeat or willful violations carry penalties up to $165,514. State OSHA plan states often have additional public-sector-specific requirements beyond federal OSHA. Each course in this package produces a downloadable certificate of completion suitable for OSHA recordkeeping and state audit response.

Common Questions

Does this package cover water and wastewater utility work?
Partially. This package covers public works topics common across municipal operations - parks, streets, sanitation, fleet, building maintenance. Water and wastewater utilities have a distinct hazard profile (chlorine handling, HAZWOPER, treatment plant lab safety) that is covered by the separate Water & Wastewater Utilities bundle. If your operation includes both public works and water/wastewater roles, contact us about a paired training plan.
What about electrical utility line work?
Out of scope. Qualified-employee training under 29 CFR 1910.269 (electric utility lineman, substation, qualified-electrical-worker credentials) is delivered through union apprenticeships, IBEW programs, and specialized providers. The electrical course in this package covers awareness-level electrical safety for streetlight, traffic signal, and shop work - not qualified-electrical-worker credentialing.
How does this address state-specific public sector requirements?
State OSHA plan states often have additional requirements for public-sector employers. California Cal/OSHA, Oregon OR-OSHA, Washington L&I, and other state plans cover public-sector employers that federal OSHA does not. The standards covered in this package (confined spaces, trenching, lockout/tagout, HAZCOM, PPE, electrical, defensive driving) are universal across federal and state OSHA programs. State-specific procedural requirements (e.g., Cal/OSHA Heat Illness Prevention) are not included and would be added as individual courses where applicable.
Are these courses available in Spanish?
Yes. All 10 courses are available in English and Spanish at no additional charge. Nine of the ten also include multi-language closed captions for additional language coverage common across municipal workforces.
Can I assign different courses to different crews?
Yes. Your employer dashboard lets you assign individual courses to specific crews and employees. A typical pattern: trenching and aerial lifts go to street and utility-cut crews; HAZCOM and PPE go to all crews; lockout/tagout goes to fleet maintenance shop staff; defensive driving and slips/trips/falls go to everyone running vehicles or working on uneven surfaces.
