Entry-Level CMV Driver Training is a 210-minute online course covering the four required theory topics for new commercial motor vehicle drivers under 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F: driver qualification requirements, hours of service regulations, driver wellness, and whistleblower protection. It is designed for entry-level CMV drivers and includes a downloadable certificate of completion.
Since February 7, 2022, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires all entry-level drivers seeking a Class A or Class B CDL, a CDL upgrade, or certain endorsements to complete training from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. FMCSA data from the years preceding this rule showed that large trucks were involved in over 5,000 fatal crashes annually, with inconsistent driver training identified as a contributing factor. This course provides an introduction to the four mandated theory topics, helping new CMV drivers build foundational knowledge before or alongside their formal ELDT program.
This course trains your new drivers on the core regulatory areas that affect their daily operations. The training covers driver qualification requirements under 49 CFR Part 391, hours of service regulations under 49 CFR Part 395, driver wellness practices that support safe operations, and whistleblower protections that safeguard drivers who report safety violations. While this course provides valuable theory-based instruction on these four topics, employers should note that it is an introduction to these principles and does not replace FMCSA-mandated ELDT from a Training Provider Registry-listed provider.
The entry-level driver training requirements at 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F took effect on February 7, 2022, implementing the mandate from the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). The rule requires entry-level drivers to complete training from an FMCSA-listed Training Provider Registry provider before taking CDL skills or knowledge tests. The theory curriculum must cover driver qualifications, hours of service, wellness, and whistleblower protection. Training providers must register on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry and self-certify compliance. FMCSA reserves the right to retroactively invalidate training in cases of fraud. While online theory training is permitted, behind-the-wheel training must occur on a closed-course range or public road. This course provides theory instruction on all four required topics as a supplemental resource, though it should not be confused with the formal ELDT program required from a TPR-listed provider.
