Chemical Hazards: Hazardous Materials Safety is a 26-minute online course that trains employees to identify, handle, and respond to chemical hazards in the workplace as required by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). It is designed for employees who work with or near hazardous chemicals across general industry, manufacturing, and construction and includes a downloadable certificate of completion.
Hazard Communication violations ranked second on OSHA's FY 2025 Top 10 Most Cited Standards list with 2,546 violations, making it the most frequently cited general industry standard. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) applies to every workplace where employees may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and requires employers to develop a written hazard communication program, maintain Safety Data Sheets, label chemical containers properly, and provide employee training. Serious violations carry penalties of up to $16,550, while willful or repeated violations can reach $165,514.
This course trains your employees to recognize the physical and health hazards associated with chemicals in their work environment. The training covers GHS-aligned labeling and pictograms, how to read and use Safety Data Sheets, proper chemical storage and handling procedures, and what to do in the event of a spill or exposure. Your team will understand the classification system that identifies flammable, corrosive, toxic, and reactive chemicals and know how to apply that information to their daily work.
OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) at 29 CFR 1910.1200 - often called the 'Right-to-Know' standard - requires employers to inform and train employees about hazardous chemicals in their workplace. The standard was aligned with the UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS) in 2012 to standardize chemical classification, labeling, and Safety Data Sheet formats worldwide. With 2,546 violations in FY 2025, HazCom ranked as the second most-cited OSHA standard overall and the most-cited in general industry. Common citation triggers include missing or outdated Safety Data Sheets, improperly labeled containers, incomplete written hazard communication programs, and lack of employee training. Employers must train workers at the time of initial assignment and whenever a new chemical hazard is introduced. Serious violations can result in penalties up to $16,550 each, and willful or repeated violations can reach $165,514.
